教育部（MOE）控制著新加坡公立學校的發展和管理。他們還就私立學校發揮諮詢和監督作用。英語是新加坡主流學校的主要教學語言。
新加坡的幼兒園為3至6歲的兒童提供學前三年的服務。其次是小學教育。四年制基礎階段（小學1至4年級），然後為期兩年的定向階段（小學5至6年級）。
義務教育是義務教育。對於在家上學，就讀全日制宗教機構的學生或無法上主流學校的有特殊需要的孩子，可以免除。為了使孩子免於受撫養，父母必須滿足教育部規定的要求。
大多數外籍父母更喜歡將自己的孩子註冊到國際學校。對與錯，特別是在西方國家的移民中，有這樣一種感覺，即新加坡的教育體系過於艱鉅。
一些移民認為工作量過多，過分強調死記硬背。話雖這麼說，新加坡在《 IMD世界競爭力排名》（2015年）中排名世界第三！
There are more than 30 international schools in Singapore such as Stamford American International School, British Private International School, Australian International School to name but a few. Parents be warned private schooling can be very costly but may sometimes be the only option if there are no vacancies in the local schools!
International students who wish to seek admission to local mainstream schools must take part in the "Admissions Exercise for International Students" , AEIS. Even if students are successful, admission is not guaranteed!
The applicant's performance as well as available school vacancies also play a roll. English is the medium of instruction in Singaporean mainstream schools.
